‘The Revolutionists’ Premieres at UNO Theatre

Omaha, NE—UNO’s “Revolutionary Season†continues with historical comedy The Revolutionists this week by one of the most produced contemporary playwrights, Lauren Gunderson. The play creatively reimagines the female perspective during the height of the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. It’s a modern take on the roles of Marie Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, who famously killed Jean-Paul Marat, and perhaps lesser known figures, like Haitian Rebel Marianne Angelle, and female playwright, Olympe de Gouges, played by Sam Mashek

UNO Percussion’s  fifth annual pop concert is this weekend. A changeup from classical repertoire, the percussion ensemble will be covering contemporary pop tunes, but they won’t be accompanied by a melody section. Only vocalists. To complete the arrangement, it’s the percussionists’ job to create their sonic palette using software, digital samples and electronic interfaces. The pop concert was devised by UNO’s Coordinator of Percussion Studies, Scott Shinbara.

Omaha, NE—This week, UNO Theatre will begin its run of Spring Awakening, the hit rock musical by songwriter Duncan Sheik and playwright Steven Sater. Based on the 19th century play of the same name by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening is the story of German adolescents struggling to understand sexual intimacy in a society that doesn’t even permit the thought of it. It won eight Tony Awards during its Broadway run, starting in 2006. As expected from any acclaimed Broadway production, the musical offers dynamic songs, choreography and engaging dialogue, but it also negotiates weighty themes, such as sexual abuse, teen pregnancy and suicide.

Omaha, NE—The Nebraska Wind Symphony and Omaha Symphonic Chorus have come together for a concert for Nebraska’s 150th anniversary, “Celebrate Nebraska.†The two organizations together comprise about 175 local singers and instrumentalists who will be playing at Millard North High School this Sunday.
