Omaha, NE—The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Open House and Studios is tomorrow, highlighting the work of its 11 current artists in residence. Coming from around the world, this season’s artists will open their studios to the public, sharing their work and creative processes—sculpture, film, and textiles to name just a few disciplines.
This season is also the first featuring the Sound Art and Experimental Music Residency Program, hosting Raven Chacon.
Sound Art is still sometimes misunderstood in the gallery space, existing somewhere between the worlds of fine art and the music industry. Chacon is a trained musician since childhood in the South West, and he has plenty of experience writing and performing music in a conventional sense. Eventually making his own instruments and microphones and incorporating field recordings and electronic sounds, Chacon entered the realm of the experimental.
Chacon considers his work to be cumulative, with each performance, recording, or installation building on the last. His performance tomorrow afternoon is a continuation of his practice.
The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts’ Open House and Studios is tomorrow, Saturday, August 3from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Performances are at 12:00pm and 4:00pm, and an ARTalk featuring current residents starts at 12:30pm. Studios are open between 1:30pm and 4:00pm. For more information, visit BemisCenter.org.
