Omaha, NE—The king is dead in Denmark, and the queen has married his brother, all while the marching Norwegian army looms over the horizon. This is the grave opening of Hamlet, Nebraska Shakespeare’s next production opening tonight. Perhaps one of the English bard’s most popular and quotable plays, Hamlet has been interpreted and reimagined on just about all of the world’s stages
This performance will be set in Shakespeare’s era more or less, featuring Renaissance costume and set design and a performance true to the text. One slight difference from the 16th century, however, is that the leading man is played by a woman. Nebraska Shakespeare invites actors from all across the country, and their recent all female cast of All’s Well that Ends Well brought Omaha a wealth of talented women. In casting, New York Actor Genevieve Simon was the right choice for the role.
For those unfamiliar with Shakespeare on the Green guests can expect vendors, a kid and pet-friendly spot on the grass of Young Park, and plenty of on-stage swordplay. It might be the most Elizabethan way to experience Shakespeare.
Hamlet this summer’s second Shakespeare on the Green production, opens tonight, June 27 on UNO’s campus with the show starting at 8:00pm. It will run through June 30 with additional showings July 2and 6. For more information, visit NebraskaShakespeare.com.
