Omaha, NE—Tower Duo, contemporary chamber ensemble and married couple, will perform at the Kaneko as part of Omaha Chamber Music Society’s Eko Nova series. Both Lecturers at various Ohio colleges, it’s not Michael and Erin Helgeson Torres first time in Omaha. This is their second time performing for Eko Nova, one of several major performance series that establish Omaha as a locale for contemporary and experimental music.
Erin and Michael began playing together after they had begun dating while students in college. Flute and saxophone, however, were an unlikely match when it came to any serious performances.
Beyond finding repertoire, a greater issue was the glaring disparity between the two instruments, like the differences in volume and timbre. Though peculiar, it has driven the Duo toward new techniques, styles of arrangement, and ultimately, their contribution to modern music.
Monday’s set list featuring all new music was based on the concept of music in motion, but that’s about the only the direction that contributors got. Working with numerous composers without constraint has culminated in a multimedia experience. The concert will feature images, recorded samples, and graphic notation that will have the duo playing together extemporaneously.
Tower Duo will perform this Monday, February 4th at 7:00pm at the Kaneko as part of the Eko Nova Concert Series. For more information or tickets, visit theKaneko.org.
