Donizetti Does High School: Opera Omaha’s ‘The Elixir of Love’
February 7th, 2019
Omaha, NE—Soprano, Deanna Breiwick, plays Adina in the Opera Omaha’s upcoming production of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. Infatuated by Adina, Nemorino is convinced that Dulcamara’s love potion is the answer, if only he can get to her before Belcore, that is. But Adina isn’t exactly a prisoner in the middle this love triangle, according to Breiwick.
Though true to the libretto, Opera Omaha’s Elixir of Love is not the story of Italian gentry, but rather the embattled hallways of a high school. Without stretching the audience’s imagination, Director, Rosstta Cucchi was reimagine Donizetti’s setting to engage audiences with opera in a new way.
Musically, the production is as it always was, an example of the Italian Bel Canto style. Costume, set design, and choreography might change, but for and experienced opera singer like Breiwick, the sheet music is still the key to discovering a character’s voice.
Opera Omaha’s production of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love is next weekend, Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:30pm at the Orpheum Theatre and Sunday the 17th at 2:00pm. Leading up to the performance, the company will host events related to the production, including Midday Music tomorrow afternoon, Opera in Conversation on the 12th, and Opera and Entrées before the show on opening night.
