‘One New Big Painting’ at Project Project

Omaha, NE—Tonight on Vinton Street, Project Project Gallery will open a new exhibition, One New Big Painting, which is in fact a single new big painting by local artist and recent UNO graduate, Anne Dovali.
Dovali is referring to Josh Powell and Joel Damon, Co-Founders and Curators of Project Project, who are always keen to experiment for the sake of art. For this exhibition, they’ve taken on Dovali as a sort of resident. Not exactly a formal artist residency, however, Dovali has been invited to live in the small gallery for about two weeks to finely detail what has become a site-specific work. Having just graduated, there weren’t many other opportunities to continue the large scale paintings she had started.
Dovali’s 5.5’ by 7’ oil on canvas painting in question, “The Compromise,†references old traditions in a new way. Characters, some recurring in Dovali’s work, are locked in a surreal battle on the canvas with a dragon, but remaining playful, rhinestones and googly eyes make an appearance.
The challenges of creating new work, opening a new show, and the battle on canvas, are all working together to build tension at Project Project leading up to tonight.
Having just a single work in the space might revise the typical gallery experience, but the labor behind “The Compromise†and its size no doubt make for a spectacle.
Anne Dovali’s “One New Big Painting†opens tonight, December 14 at Project Project Gallery on Vinton Street from 6-10pm. For more information, visit ProjectProjectOmaha.com.
