Women Win Big in Midterm Elections

OMAHA, Neb. — This year’s midterm elections marked an historic day for women candidates, with a number of firsts across the country, including right here in the heartland.

Iowa elected a female governor and female members of the House of Representatives for the first time. In Nebraska, two women—Megan Hunt and Machaela Cavanaugh–will enter their first term in the Unicameral when session resumes this January, and a third, Wendy DeBoer, whose race is still too close to call, could become a state senator as well.

Hunt, Cavanaugh, and DeBoer each weighed in on the success of women on Nov. 6, spoke on representation in government, and outlined some of the things they hope to bring to Lincoln in the upcoming session.
