Omaha, NE—Tonight at the Blue Barn Theatre is the Midwest premier of a new play, The City in the City in the City by New Jersey playwright Matthew Capodicasa. His plays have been performed on the stages of New York, and he’s come to Omaha by way of the Great Plains Theatre Conference. The City begins in strange circumstances and an outlandish proposal, ending up in a mysterious fictional setting.
The City in the City is deeply rooted not in theater, but some the great speculative fiction of the 20th Century by writers like Italo Calvino, Jorge Luis Borges and Shirley Jackson.
When initially writing the play, Capodicasa imagined all sorts of cities to house the plot, like Tokyo, Paris and Marrakesh, but the story took shape when reality was put aside and an imaginary city was devised instead.
There are only two actors in the play, but that doesn’t limit the number of characters. They’ll have some weight placed on their shoulders.
The City in the City in the City opens tonight at the Blue Barn and will run until June 17th with performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays June 3rd and 17th at 6:00pm, and June 10th at 2:00pm. For more information or tickets, visit BlueBarn.org.
