Omaha, NE—First Friday in the Old Market opens up a variety of opportunities for artists and patrons to appreciate local talent. In addition to the events at galleries and performance spaces, it’s also a night of pop-up exhibitions. Tonight, the 8th Annual Abuse Survivors Art show, showcasing the healing journey of survivors, will open at the SOZO Coffeehouse. The exhibition was organized by Kathleen Keller with ArtWorx, a local nonprofit.

For survivors, art and expression can have a therapeutic effect, according to Keller. Sharing that kind of intimate work can be difficult for artists, but for some, the process of sharing has helped to move past traumatic events.

The exhibition includes a diverse group of artists, disciplines and materials.

Tonight’s opening will also feature a performance, excerpts from an original play and recitations of poetry. Later this month, the coffeehouse will host workshops presented by artists and therapists on expression, identity and writing to deal with trauma. Each is free and open to the public.

The 8th Annual Abuse Survivors Art Show at SOZO Coffeehouse opens tonight, May 4th, at 6:00pm with readings beginning at 7:00pm. The exhibition will be on display until May 28th.
