‘Venus in Fur’ at Bluebarn Theater

Omaha, NE—Venus in Fur is the next play to be shown at the Bluebarn Theatre. It’s based on the 19th century erotic novel Venus in Furs written by Austrian Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, whose name gave rise to the word “masochism”—as in sadomasochism. You could consider the novel one of the original texts on the subject, but the contemporary play by David Ives is the story of just two characters—a modern director and actress looking to adapt the story for the stage.

“Ripcord is about two women who are living as roommates in a senior living facility in New Jersey,” Hickman said. “One of the women has been there for four years. The other woman has been there for only a few weeks, and they do not really live well together. The woman who’s been there the longest, Abby, she’s very principled. She has her ways. She’s very set in them, and the other woman Marilyn is much more of a go-with-the-flow-type of person I would say.”
Abby and Marilyn are forced to share a room together, and the two women develop a sort of “Odd-Couple” relationship. As Abby attempts to get rid of her unwanted new roommate, a series of bets soon escalates into a game of one-upmanship.
