Classic ’70s Tunes Come to Omaha Coummunity Playhouse
June 20th, 2017
Omaha, NE—Starting June 15, the Omaha Community Playhouse will be showing Girls Like Us: The Music of Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell. Singers, Laura Freeman, Beckie Menzie, and Marianne Murphy Orland will perform some of the pop icons’ greatest hits while taking a look at their lives.
To Freeman, there is no question that these artists were an important inspiration and voices of a generation.
“Well if you are certain age and you are female,†Freeman said, “the chances are extraordinarily good that you owned the Tapestry album and that you grew up listening to these three ladies in some aspect. They touched so many people’s lives who were born in the fifties, sixties and seventies, and it’s part of the makeup of our lives, and I guess they all mean something new to us.â€
The performance is based on a book by Sheila Weller titled Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and the Journey of a Generation. While reading it during the run of a another performance, Miss Cast, Freeman, Menzie, and Orland decided to set their sights on covering the icons of the ’70s.
CUE: “The group of us has been singing together for over five years,†Freeman said, “we, along with another lady, were doing a show that was about Broadway characters that we would never play in real life. It was a jokey kind of show. And the day of the show the other girl got sick, and the show must go on, and we went on and after the show we went, ‘wow, we have a really great sound.’”
Some songs to be heard are “Big Yellow Taxi,†“Natural Woman,†and “You’re So Vain.â€
“I think the audience is in for a nostalgic look at music that was important in different parts of their lives,†Freeman said. “We approach these ladies with respect but with a sense of humor and hopefully you’ll learn something about them and have a lot of fun and learn something about us as well, and I think I think they’re guaranteed to have a great time. They’re going to know all the music so they’ll leave humming.â€
Girls Like Us will show at the Omaha Community Playhouse this Thursday through Sunday, June 15 to 18, and next, June 22 to 25. For tickets, visit ticketomaha.com
