On today’s “Road to Omaha” series spot, KVNO’s Brandon McDermott spoke with Rob Childress, head baseball coach at Texas A&M.
Omaha, NE – For an outsider looking at the final SEC standings, Texas A&M in the middle of the pack. It may look like a down year, but the Aggies are leading the conference in ERA – allowing only a .235 batting average to opposing pitchers and they are 5th out of 14 teams in total runs scored.
The 12th man creates a great experience and atmosphere during home games. Coach Childress says this makes it tough for opposing teams. Freshman Braden Shewmake is a coach’s kid. Childress compared Shewmake’s freshman year to Alex Gordon’s freshman year at Nebraska in 2003.
Another player Childress called productive is Nick Choruby. His batting average may not pop off the page (.308) – but his on base percentage is .431 he has 43 walks.
The Aggies have lost 7 of their last 9 games – Childress said it’s just a part of baseball where streaks happen and you just got to get out there and get after it. He said he has the type of team to make some noise in the SEC tourney and beyond.
Texas A&M takes on Missouri Tuesday and LSU Wednesday in the SEC tournament in Hoover, Alabama.
