Omaha, NE – Today KVNO’s Brandon McDermott speaks with LSU head baseball coach Paul Mainieri about the Tigers season and how to continue the success going forward.

LSU is at the top or near the top in most offensive categories in the SEC. One stats which sticks out to is the Tigers have the least amount of strikeouts in the conference. Looking on paper, LSU’s pitching staff is in the middle of most SEC team stats. But the three regular Tiger starters are a combined 20-9 allowing a .230 average to opposing hitters.

Alex Lange just received SEC pitcher of the week and has a nasty 4-1 strikeouts to walks ratio. The Tigers were in the middle of the pack of the SEC in April following a series loss at Kentucky. But now they’re 10th in the top 25 in the country and fighting for first place in the deepest league in college baseball. Mainieri called the SEC the “Major League” of college baseball with how well teams recruit and develop players who are more ready for a try at pro ball after facing stiff competition in the SEC.

LSU has struggled a bit in mid-week games this year; going 7-6 heading into tonight’s game against Northwestern State. But Mainieri thinks part of that is due to other teams circling the LSU game on their schedules. He looks for his squad to continue rolling into the conference tournament and beyond.
