On this episode of “Road to Omaha,” KVNO’s Brandon McDermott spoke with head baseball coach at the University of Kentucky, Nick Mingione.
Omaha, NE – Kentucky head baseball coach Nick Mingione has been at the helm of the Kentucky baseball team for 11 months. In that time – he’s guided the Wildcats to a 37-16 record. His enthusiasm is infectious, that is evident in his interview.
Thought Kentucky started off the year 0-4 – losing three of those games by one run, things started clicking for them Mingione said. The Wildcats are batting .322 collectively – 30 points higher than any other SEC team. They’ve got seven hitters hitting above .300 and another player batting .299. That said, Kentucky aren’t slouches on the mound – ranking second in the SEC in team ERA, This after losing all 42 starts from their weekend rotation from last year.
They are 26-5 at home but 11-11 away from Lexington, but this doesn’t worry Mingione as he said his team has played a tough mid-week schedule with the likes of Louisville, Cincinnati and Indiana.
Mingione absolutely lauded his first-baseman Evan White, calling him the “best first-baseman on planet earth.â€
Kentucky has a weekend series with Florida starting tonight in Gainesville, FL with one of the toughest team’s in the SEC.
