Maverick men’s soccer team nets two wins

September 9th, 2014

Omaha, NE – The University of Nebraska at Omaha men’s soccer team is in their final transition year to Division-I before being fully eligible for postseason play starting next year.

With this in mind, Maverick head coach Jason Mims has been scheduling a much more grueling schedule for his squad getting them ready for a future run. Last weekend brought Santa Clara and Stanford to town, and both games ended in heartbreaking losses for UNO. This weekend the Mavs took on Cincinnati and Belmont at Caniglia field on the campus of UNO.

In Friday’s game against Cincinnati, UNO came out strong and for the second time this year, they scored two goals within 90 seconds of each other. The first was a Felipe da Silva goal and the second was a beauty from Mark Moulton. The Bearcats did add a goal in the 28th minute to make it 2-1 UNO. Moulton, the sophomore midfielder had a career game, scoring a goal and netting two assists. This included an assist on UNO’s last goal in the 82nd minute to give the Mavs a decisive 3-1 victory. The game with the Bearcats was a heated one – Cincinnati had 23 fouls and UNO had 18.

Sunday’s game against Belmont was pretty much a carbon copy of Friday’s Cincinnati game. Senior forward Vance Rookwood scored a pair of goals and Mark Moulton added another assist. UNO claimed another 3-1 win. The Mavericks (2-2 overall, 0-0 in the Summit) held a 12-3 shooting advantage and a 14-4 corner kick advantage over Belmont. Moulton (7) and Rookwood (6) are ranked one and two in the Summit League for most points so far this year. Moulton leads the Summit with five assists and Rookwood leads the Summit with three goals. Monday the Summit League announced the Mavs took both the Offensive (Mark Moulton) and Defensive (Nick Miller) Player of the Week Awards.

UNO now takes the show on the road for two straight weekends. First next weekend the Mavs travel to Kansas City to take on UMKC Saturday at 1pm. Then UNO has two games the following weekend Friday September 19th at 9pm against Cal-State Northridge and Sunday September 21 at 3pm against Cal-State Fullerton.
