Drake was first on the scoreboard, as sophomore midfielder Rhian Pritchard hit an 85-foot shot into the left corner for a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks responded in the 29th minute as sophomore forward Chelsi Rohloff scored to tie things up at one a piece. Head coach Don Klosterman said bringing Rohloff in as relief can keep opposing teams off balance.

“I kind of told her when she went into the game,” Klosterman said. “I said this is kind of why we are bringing you off of the bench, because you can come in and (create a) spark.’ And she came in and did a great job, she is quick, she can take people on. (She had a) nice shot for her goal; that is her game,” he said.

Drake’s Rebecca Rodgers scored a goal in the 73rd minute to give the Bulldogs control of the game and ten minutes later they scored an additional goal to put the scrimmage away by the score of 3-1. Klosterman said he had seen several aspects of the Mavs play on Thursday night that left him encouraged. But he sees plenty of room for growth as the year progresses.

“I told them I think we need to be tougher,” Klosterman said. “Tougher on tackles, tackle harder, play with a little bit more intensity, (and) play a little bit harder,” he said. “If we are going to beat these teams, we are going to have step that part of our game up just a little bit. Or a little bit at a time, I would like it to be a lot better, but it has got to be better on Sunday against KU,” he said.

UNO takes on the University of Kansas on Sunday in Lawrence, it is the Mavericks final exhibition game before the regular season commences next Friday in Las Cruces, New Mexico for a game against New Mexico State University.
