Regents approve plans for UNO sports arena
October 26th, 2012
Omaha, NE – The University of Nebraska Omaha is one step closer to construction of an on-campus sports arena. The University of Nebraska Board of Regents authorized NU President J.B. Milliken to enter into a letter of intent with developers today.
The proposed arena would be privately constructed and eventually acquired by UNO through a lease agreement. The $76.3 million facility would seat about 7,500 people and would provide a venue for Maverick hockey, basketball and volleyball under one roof on campus. Maverick sports are currently played across the city: hockey at CenturyLink Center Omaha, basketball at Ralston Arena and volleyball at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO officials said the funding would primarily be raised through private donations and financing through the developer.
In a statement, UNO Athletic Director Trev Alberts said the arena would be “transformative†for the department. He said the move is the first step in a process that will place UNO Athletics on “firm financial footing.â€
The proposed site of the building is at 68th and Center Streets, just south of Aksarben Village.
