Playhouse prepares to go blonde
September 13th, 2012
Omaha, NE – A blonde and legally savvy Elle Woods takes the stage at the Omaha Community Playhouse this weekend.
Legally Blonde – The Musical is a Broadway production based on the 2001 film of the same name, minus the musical. It’s the story of a blonde sorority queen, who chases her love-interest to Harvard Law School and discovers, pink outfit and all, that she has a savvy legal brain.
“It’s 99% absolute fun,” said Carl Beck, the Artistic Director of the Omaha Community Playhouse, which is staging a local production of the play. “And yes, a message about discovering self worth, about moving beyond, about first perceptions that aren’t necessarily accurate and growth,” he said. “So it does have a message. It can be extremely moving.”
“But it’s also a big fun romp.”
Beck said for such a fluffy title, Legally Blonde is one of the most challenging productions the Playhouse has taken on. “A film can hop from location to location to location and be much more cinematic in their approach,” he said. “So as a result, in order to tell the story of the film in musical format on stage, you find yourself with multiple set changes.”
“Sometimes a song can have as many as three separate sets,” he said. “So it’s a huge show to take on.”
Legally Blonde opens Friday at the Omaha Community Playhouse. The production stars Leanne Hill Carlson as Elle Woods. (Click the audio link above to hear clips from the film and a scene from the Broadway production.)
