Maverick basketball adds transfers; soccer and cross country ready for competition

Omaha, NE – The University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks’ cross country and soccer teams are competing this weekend, and the men’s basketball team has announced additional recruits for the upcoming season.

The UNO women’s cross country team embarks on a new season Saturday with the UNO/Creighton Classic at the Chili Greens Complex. The women’s 5k starts at 10am and UNO faces off against several teams, including Nebraska and Creighton. Senior runner Amanda Vorthmann heads a group of nine players that return from last year’s squad. Vorthmann took first place in six of UNO’s seven meets last year.

In soccer, the men’s team notched its first home win in program history by beating Bellevue University, 4-0 this week. In the victory for UNO, sophomore midfielder Vance Rookwood scored one goal on six shots and also added an assist for the Mavs. In exhibition play, Rookwood scored a goal in the two of three games. The Mavs next game is Friday at 4:30 against Mercer, in Illinois.

The women’s soccer team is fresh off defeat, losing 3-1 to Utah State. UNO is now 0-3 on the year with two games this weekend. First a game Friday against Wyoming, in Laramie, which starts at 5pm. The second game is Sunday in Colorado against Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Turning to men’s basketball, head coach Darin Hansen announced the addition of two transfer recruits. Guard Alex Phillips comes to UNO from New Mexico Junior College where he averaged 10 points per game last year as a sophomore. Forward Mike Rostampour heads to the Mavs from St. Cloud State University. He will redshirt this season as per NCAA rules. The Mavs’ first game this year is November 9th against Northern Illinois.
