New schedules released for Maverick soccer, volleyball

Omaha, NE – It has been a quiet summer season for University of Nebraska Omaha sports. But there has been plenty of news this week including newly-released schedules in volleyball and men’s soccer.

The UNO men’s soccer team has released its schedule for the upcoming season. The new schedule includes a total of 16 games, and the Mavericks will be playing against seven Summit League opponents. All seven homes games will be played at UNO Soccer Field at 68th and Spring Streets. A couple games of note this year include one against Seattle University on September 9th. The game is scheduled to start at 5pm. The Mavs will also play against Oakland University on October 28th at 12pm. Head Coach Jason Mims is looking to improve from his first year at the helm, when UNO finished 1-11-1.

Volleyball Head Coach Rose Shires also released her team’s schedule Friday. The Mavericks schedule includes games against Syracuse University (Sept. 4) Kansas State University (Sept. 22) and UMKC (Sept. 25). The Mavs will also become an official member of the Summit League this year and will face 16 Summit League opponents. Shires enters her 23rd season at UNO and will have a very inexperienced team on her hands, with nine of 14 players being freshmen.

In hockey news, Head Coach Dean Blais announced this week sophomore goaltender Ryan Massa will take a year off from hockey for personal reasons. Massa is coming off of a freshman campaign with seven wins, a 2.60 goals against average and a .960 save percentage. UNO starts the year on October 8th against the University of Lethbridge. The game is a scheduled exhibition and will be played at the CenturyLink Center.
