Seussical – The Musical opens at the Rose
June 5th, 2012
Omaha, NE – The Dr. Seuss book collection opens up a world of imagination in Seussical – The Musical at the Rose Theatre.
Seussical – The Musical includes a blend of characters from classic children’s stories written by Dr. Seuss, including Horton Hears a Who!, The Lorax and The Cat in the Hat. In the Rose’s production, actor Kevin Ehrhart plays the character “The Cat” from The Cat in the Hat who narrates the play, and wears a 2.5 foot tall, red and white striped hat.
“Everyone recognizes that hat,” Ehrhart said. “In fact it starts the whole show, and when I come out underneath it,” he laughed, “the audience connects with it right away.”
“As a performer, it’s just fun to be able to connect with the audience immediately,” he said.
Jenny Holcombe, who directs the play, said Dr. Seuss uses rhyme scheme and animal characters with human characteristics to tell stories with a message. “What’s really great about Dr. Seuss, and what I really connect with,” she said, “is that he tells these great stories that have lessons attached to them.”
“Every story that you read is a lesson about something,” she said. “It’s not just a fun story…you’re actually learning something in the process.”
Ehrhart said Seussical – The Musical highlights the importance of accepting other people: a message he said his 8-year-old daughter, who is also in the show, learned through the story’s depiction of a diverse family. “It’s kind of weird that this elephant and this bird have a baby,” he said. “But, you know what, it’s really not about elephants and birds, it’s just about people accepting each other.”
Seussical -The Musical runs through June 17th at the Rose Theatre in downtown Omaha.
