For the Sake of the Children is a comedic drama by William Pierce, the founder and CEO of Second Chance Productions located in Minnesota. Pierce also directs and acts as the character “Grandpa†in the show. In this play, his drug-addicted daughter “Denise†is more concerned with getting high than taking care of her three children. Pierce said his character shoots from the hip, as he tries to get Denise to change her ways.
“She’s not really concerned about those children. Throughout the play we try to get her to understand that it’s not just about her, but it’s about her children…†Pierce said.
“If she doesn’t want to change for herself, then at least do it for the sake of the children,†he said.
Although the play is a comedic drama, Pierce says the show addresses serious issues including drug addictions, family structure, and sexual abuse.
“We use comedy to kind of get the people to relax and draw them in. Slowly but surely, we bring in the drama and seriousness of the play,†he said.
Pierce said with stories like this, it is important to remember the importance of family and the community.
“Dr. King said it best, and we say this in the play: ‘what affects one directly affects all indirectly,'” he said. “So we are all tied together somehow.â€
For the Sake of the Children opens Friday at the Holland Performing Arts Center in downtown Omaha.
