“Nate the Great,” is dressed in a long trench coat and top hat. He stands with his faithful dog, Sludge, and introduces the rest of the characters in The Adventures of Nate the Great. Andy Saladino, who plays Nate, is a teaching artist at The Rose. I caught up with him at a recent run-through rehearsal of the play, which opens Friday.

The play is “a mystery…a little creepy at times, but not too scary,” Saladino said. “But really quirky and fun…watching Nate kind of use his deduction skills to figure stuff out.”

The play is based on a series of children’s detective stories that follow the adventures of “Nate the Great.”

Acting as seven and eight year olds, the adult cast at The Rose takes the audience on an adventure, solving mysteries, including finding missing art work, prizes for a pet contest and even a missing box.

Kate Morgan is a teaching artist intern at the Rose, who plays Claudia, Nate’s forgetful friend. She said working with kids at The Rose helped her prepare for the show.

“It’s interesting to look at kids that we see come in,” she said. “and notice their mannerisms and notice how they act, and how they walk and what they say… and try to make that translate and come across on stage.”
