Aspen Santa Fe Ballet returns with “The Nutcracker”
December 8th, 2011
Omaha, NE – For the second year now, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s The Nutcracker will be performed at Omaha’s Orpheum Theater.
This traditional production of The Nutcracker has a large cast that includes professional dancers, along with about 80 young, local performers. Tom Mossbrucker, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s artistic director said the youngest cast members are five-year-olds, who play the part of bumblebees.
“It’s not often that a young dancer gets to be in a professional production,” Mossbrucker said. (They) “get to dance alongside professional dancers and see the way they conduct themselves backstage.”
“They just learn a lot about the craft,” he said.
For this production, Mossbrucker said the audience will see beautiful costumes. He also described the set as colorful, bright, and whimsical.
“The whole second act is based on … an old, antique carousel with golds, pinks, and colored lights, old fashioned light bulbs, and old fashioned carousel animals,” he said. “There’s an ostrich, and a zebra, a frog, rabbits, and a horse.”
“It’s just very whimsical,” he said.
The Nutcracker kicks off Friday, December 9th and runs through the 11th at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Omaha.
