August 4th, 2011
Omaha, NE – He calls himself the Master of the Mallets. As you watch Steve Raybine perform, twirling two mallets in each hand, he appears to be a master of his craft.
A native of Omaha, Raybine’s instrument is the vibraphone. Also known as “the vibes,” a vibraphone is similar to a xylophone or glockenspiel, and uses aluminum bars as percussion.
Raybine has taken his instrument on tour throughout the United States and Europe, performing contemporary jazz compositions as a member of the progressive jazz ensemble Auracle.
Raybine has also taught jazz studies and percussion at universities around the country, and received the Jazz Educator of the Year Award from the State of Nebraska in 1997. Raybine performs at Jazz on the Green in Omaha’s Turner Park Thursday night.
