This will be Klosterman‘s 12th season as Head Coach at UNO. The jump to Division I this year for UNO, specifically for the Soccer program, will be unlike any challenge it’s faced previously. But coach Klosterman thinks UNO’s women’s soccer team could benefit greatly. Over the last five years Division I has grown from providing 9.9 athletic scholarships every year to 14. Division II has remained at 9.9. And according to Coach Klosterman, that’s had a big affect on recruiting.

“Well I think for one thing, I think it’s going to be exciting, I think the players have bought into this thing, and their excited about making this change and the challenge that’s ahead of them,” said Klosterman. “It’s not what they bargained for, or expected, but they’ve jumped into it. I’ll say this about our team, not one of them has made a remark or complained, or whined about what we are doing, they’re all excited about making the change.â€
With the upcoming season looming, UNO will have a mix of Division I and II teams to face on the schedule while making the transition. Coach Klosterman covered a few games that may cause UNO some trouble:
“Creighton, Wisconsin-Green Bay, if you look down the schedule here, we are going to face some tough teams: North Dakota State is a very good team,” said Klosterman.
Coming into the season Coach Klosterman saw a lot of improvement from last year. Sophomore midfielder Mel McCormick in particular has improved, he said, as well as one of the teams leading goal scorers: Hillary Horvatic. A couple surprises to look out for are a pair of sophomores in defender Kerry Pivovar who has upped her game since freshman year and Katelyn Tschida who will start at goal for UNO.
The season starts with an exhibition at Creighton on August 13th at 7pm. UNO’s first regular season game is at Wisconsin Green Bay on Friday August 19th. Though an official schedule has not yet been set, the brand new UNO men’s soccer team will begin their first season around the same time.
