Big sound coming to jazz on the green
July 21st, 2011
Omaha, NE – One big band is making big waves throughout Omaha with a combination of swing and jazz. Now, they’re playing at a new location for Jazz on the Green.
Members of the Omaha Big Band have made a name for themselves not only in the category of swing, but jazz too. Music director and trombonist for the band, Chris Akers said the band places a lot of emphasis on their influences.
“We’ll do anything from tributes to Glen Miller, and tributes to Duke Ellington, to things like Aja by Steely Dan, so a real diverse mix. Nothing crazy or wacky by any means, but just kind of a diverse mix of standards and newer, contemporary arrangements.â€
It’s that kind of diversity that has made the band a popular attraction. Now, members of the Omaha Big Band are bringing their act to this year’s Jazz on the Green. But this isn’t their first rodeo, Ackers said the band has enjoyed playing the event before, and is excited about the change in venue.
“This is the first time of course at Midtown, but it’s always great just to play in front of that many people, responsive people,” he said. “The crowds we’ve had before … were so responsive. They’re really listening.â€
The Omaha Big Band will performing Thursday, July 21, at Midtown Crossing for Jazz on the Green.
