Lincoln, NE – When John F. Kennedy became President in 1961, many in the Civil Rights movement thought the younger president would make their struggle his top priority. But the Cold War and threat of a nuclear exchange remained center stage despite troubles in the segregated south. NET’s Jonathan Ash reports how two groups of Freedom Riders, one in 1961 and another 50 years later, set out to change minds throughout the country.

The 2011 Student Freedom Ride concludes in New Orleans May 16. That night PBS will air the Freedom Riders documentary on PBS’ American Experience.
