March 11th, 2011
Omaha, NE – The month of March means championship endings and new season beginnings for the athletes of Nebraska-Omaha.
Last Friday, UNO began conference play in baseball for the 2011 season with a four-game set against Southwest Baptist. The Mavericks lost the opening game on Friday, but took the second game of the double header and won both games on Saturday. The three wins bring the season win total to five, with just two losses. UNO plays two games today and two tomorrow at Pittsburgh State.
For UNO wrestlers, this weekend marks the end of the 2010-2011 season. The NCAA Division II tournament got underway Friday morning in Kearney, Nebraska. All 10 Maverick wrestlers qualified, and eight won their opening round matches. Top ranked 157-pounder George Ivanov was one of the two Mavericks to lose. The 11-9 upset loss to Winston Robbins of Upper Iowa means the best Ivanov can finish is third. Second round action resumes Friday night at 6 pm.
The WCHA playoffs begin Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha for the UNO hockey team. The third-seeded Mavericks take on another first-year WCHA team, Bemidji State. The Mavericks came just one point short of finishing second in the conference after a split with Minnesota-Duluth last weekend. This weekend’s foe has been a thorn in Maverick sides this season. The Beavers have beaten UNO three times, and earned a tie in the fourth game this season. A best of three series is on tap for this weekend. Action begins Friday night on 90.7 KVNO at 7:37 pm.
After starting the season 9-1, last weekend’s Best Western Premier Spring Fling tournament was unkind to Maverick women’s softball. UNO lost three of four games in the Denton, Texas tournament. The women will be looking to get back on track this weekend against Northeastern State and Missouri- St. Louis. Both games will be played in Emporia, Kansas.
