The modern opera Nixon in China follows the story of President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China, where with met with Chairman Mao in 1972. It was one of most surprising visits of a presidential term, and marked a turn in U.S. relations with the Communist country, then known as the People’s Republic of China.
The opera features music by American composer John Adams. Adams has said all of his operas have “dealt on deep psychological levels with our American mythology.†And that “the meeting of Nixon and Mao is a mythological moment in world history.â€
Nixon in China was written to explore the human truths behind the headlines. The minimalist performance received mixed reviews when it debuted in 1987, but has since come to be regarded as one of the most influential, genre-bending modern operas.
The performance comes to the screen at Filmstreams and to the air on Classical 90.7 KVNO, by way of the Metropolitan Opera, in partnership with Opera Omaha. It will play live at noon Saturday, February 12th, with an encore performance at Filmstreams the evening of February 16th.
