Omaha, NE – Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle will face a recall election. Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps announced today that his office has counted enough valid signatures to put Suttle’s name back on the ballot.

Suttle will be officially notified by certified mail early next week. He then has five days to decide whether he will resign or face a recall election. Suttle has already said publicly he has no intention to resign. The Omaha City Council will set a date for a recall election, likely Jan. 25.

The Mayor Suttle Recall Committee collected over 37,000 signatures in a petition drive to recall the Mayor, based on disagreements over fiscal policy and tax hikes. Suttle’s office, and a supporter group, Forward Omaha, accused the committee of violating petition laws and collecting invalid signatures. But at a press conference this morning, Phipps said there was no evidence of “widespread fraud.”

Suttle has hired an attorney, Vince Powers, to challenge the recall. A tentative hearing has been set in Douglas County District Court. Dec. 20.
