New traditions for Nutcracker
December 2nd, 2010
Omaha, NE – The Nutcracker Ballet kicks off the holiday season this December weekend.
It’ll be the first year the Aspen Sante Fe Ballet performs the Nutcracker in Omaha. The classic holiday production has been performed each year by local dance troupes Ballet Omaha, and later Omaha Theater Ballet, since the 1990s. But the curtain fell on the city’s professional dance company last year, and the Aspen Sante Fe Ballet will pick up the baton for this weekend’s performance.
“Oh, I think people are just going to love the style that they do… it’s a little bit Cirque du Soleil,†said Julie Walker, Managing Director of the Rose Theater, which is putting on the production in partnership with Omaha Performing Arts.
“So it’s a different than our tradition. Last year we did a more traditional Nutcracker, and this is maybe a little bit more modern, and very fan friendly,†she said. “I think people are really going to enjoy the show.â€
Walker said the performance will keep its local roots with over 120 local dancers cast in the show. “The fun part is that we get to put lots of kids from the Omaha community in it,†she said. “They love to participate, and it makes the show really fun and gives it kind of an Omaha flavor.â€
The Nutcracker opens this weekend, with performances Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Omaha.
