Nebraska keeps State Treasurer office

Lincoln, NE – The proposed cost-saving measure to abolish the Nebraska’s State Treasurer’s office in 2015 failed to pass with almost 67%  voting down the measure, as of 11:30pm Tuesday night. Republican Don Stenberg won the seat for the next term, and said he still hopes his office can save the state money.

“We need to further look at whether we can consolidate some of the state’s financial services,” he said, “and save the taxpayer some money.” He said  that consolidation can be done under the State Treasurer, “and maybe eliminate some of the appointed positions in state government.”

Former Secretary of State Allen Beermann said he wasn’t surprised by the vote. “Those things have been tried before,” he said, “and people will not give up checks and balances, especially on a constitutional office.”
