Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto will headline the night’s performance. This year’s concerto competition winner Yasmeen Bora will take on this notoriously difficult piece. Aviva Segall, music director for the Omaha Area Youth Orchestra, said “It’s definitely not easy, but she makes it look easy.” She’s a wonderful player, she said. “She’s got great technique, tremendous stage presence for someone as young as she is; she’s only a sophomore in high school.”
The Youth Symphony will be joined by the Youth Philharmonic, the Youth Conservatory Orchestra and the Youth Chamber Strings. The performance will also include a collaboration with Opera Omaha. The Valmont Voices in Residence will sing, while the orchestra performs Hector Berlioz’ March to the Scaffold and Mozart’s Don Giovanni quartet.
“It’s really a great masterpiece of opera,” Segall said. “So it’s really a wonderful opportunity for our musicians to have a little taste of what a wonderful masterpiece that is.”
The performance is at 6:30pm Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Holland Performing Arts Center.
