Omaha Central soloist joins Omaha Symphony for Mendelssohn’s Elijah
November 9th, 2018
Led by Principal Pops Conductor Ernest Richardson, Mendelssohn’s Elijah will feature professional soloists Chelsea Basler, soprano; Shirin Eskandani, mezzo soprano; Michael Kuhn, tenor; and John Robert Green, baritone, as well as nearly 500 singers from Omaha-area high schools as part of the symphony’s annual Choral Collaborative program. Among the professionals, the piece features two local high school soloists, I spoke with 17-year-old senior, Lily Weak of Omaha Central about her opportunity.
WEAK: “I will be singing the youth solo in a recitative piece with the Omaha Symphony. We were in the the big mass rehearsal that we had here at Central which was already such in interesting experience, it was like All-State but here in Omaha at Central which was super cool. Then they announced it, just like as a side note during rehearsal, ‘Oh, and by the way, there is a solo you can audition for.”
She auditioned at the Holland Center with maestro Richardson.
WEAK: “He critiqued me and asked me to try a couple of things differently and because I’m a senior this year he asked me about college and all of that scary stuff. It felt like a lesson, it didn’t really even feel like an audition. It felt like a lesson more than anything else. He was really great.”
Dundis: program. A chance to work with these musicians helped with confidence and how she deals with her nerves.
WEAK: “I’ve learned to solve it by going over the lyrics in my head and thinking about what I’m going to go do, and center myself. That always helps a lot because once you’re confident in yourself, the nerves go away a little bit.”
She plans to study music after high school and you can hear her sing with the Symphony this Sunday.
WEAK: “I think it’ll be really, really cool to perform in the Holland Center with all of my peers in Omaha and it will be just an amazing experience because it’s something a lot of the kids in the chorus has never done before. You’ll get to see high school kids having a passion for classical music, and that’s not something you get to see everyday.”
Omaha Central senior Lily Weak will be singing with the Omaha Symphony and guest artists in Mendelssohn’s beloved oratorio Elijah this Sunday at the Holland Center, conducted by Ernest Richardson.
