Following two straight heartbreaking overtime losses in a span of three days in August, the Mavericks have rebounded nicely. Last weekend UNO grabbed two impressive 3-1 victories over Cincinnati and Belmont. Saturday UNO took on the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Missouri.
UNO’s sophomore forward Christian Garcia, the 2013 Summit League Newcomer of the Year, scored his first goal of 2014. It couldn’t have come at a better time for UNO. The game was tied 0-0 and the Mavs were in the midst of a defensive struggle with the Kangaroos. Garcia’s goal came after a nice cross from teammate junior midfielder Logan Mendez. Garcia trapped the pass from 12 feet out and tapped it in for the 1-0 lead. The game was pretty even otherwise, UNO held a 10-8 shot advantage, but did have 5 shots on goal to UMKC’s 2.
The game was tense at times and it showed with UNO’s 14 fouls to UMKC’s 13. Garcia’s goal at the 19’ was enough for UNO to secure victory. UNO’s (3-2 overall, 0-0 Summit) defense was stout as usual and junior Goalkeeper Josh Christensen had two saves in the win and now is third in the Summit League with a 0.98 goals against average. Several other Mavs dot the leading statistic list for the Summit League, including sophomore midfielder Mark Moulton who is first in assists with five. Moulton (7) and senior forward Vance Rookwood (6) are tied for first and second in the Summit League for most points so far this year.
UMKC (1-2-1, 0-0 WAC) plays Saint Louis in Missouri Tuesday at 7pm. UNO now travels west to California for two games next weekend. First Friday the Mavs take on Cal-State Northridge at 9pm CST and then Sunday UNO takes on Cal-State Fullerton at 3pm. Both games will be played in Fullerton, CA.
