Hayes announced his resignation earlier this month, not citing specific reasons for the decision.

Baker is a 23-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, and would serve as acting chief while the city conducts a nationwide search for Hayes’ permanent replacement. The mayor’s office said it would also look at candidates currently serving on the Omaha police force.

According to a statement by the mayor’s office, Baker has supported community policing and technological changes associated with the city’s shot spotter system. He has served as Deputy Chief for the past four years, and has also been in charge of disciplinary standards for the force.
